The official Makuuchi ranking. Two slots per rank — East and West face each other, from the grand champion down to the last maegashira.

Sanyaku — the titled ranks
The four ranks that carry a title. They hold only a handful of slots: reaching them is an achievement in itself, and only the Yokozuna can never be demoted.

Maegashira — the body of the division
Numbered from 1 (the highest) downwards, they make up the bulk of Makuuchi. Number 1 faces the champions in the opening days of the tournament.

Each rank has two slots: East ranks slightly above West. Records read wins-losses, followed by absences where relevant; from 8 wins the tournament counts as winning and moves a wrestler up the ranking.
Kachi-koshi
Un bilan positif : au moins 8 victoires sur 15 combats. C'est le seuil qui protège ou améliore le rang d'un lutteur au prochain banzuke.
